Famous Rowers

There are many people in the world who are acclaimed and honoured for their contribution to a particular industry.

A few famous Brits are Shirley Bassey who is renowned for her recording of James Bond theme songs; William Shakespeare who is arguably one of the most famous writers in the world; and David Beckham who is internationally recognised for his football skills.

But who is the country’s most prominent rowing oarsmen?

Legendary rowers who have trained incredibly hard on rowing machines to better their careers include;

- Sir Steven Redgrave

Redgrave is the Olympic rowing’s most famous modern oarsman. He won gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games from 1984 to 2000 and he has also won three Commonwealth Games gold medals and nine World Rowing Championships gold medals.

- Robert Chambers

Chambers was a famous professional oarsman from Tyneside, in Newcastle. He became the Tyne, Thames, English and World Sculling Champion and was one of three great Tyneside oarsmen at that time of rowing.

As for the rest of the world, who else are famous rowers?

- Ernestine “Ernie” Bayer

Bayer was the most famous female rower in the history of the United States. She fought for decades to make female rowing an acceptable sport and is known as the mother of women’s rowing in America.

- Baron Pierre de Coubertin

Pierre de Coubertin was a French historian and founder of the modern Olympic Games and he was in fact a rower.

- Dr. Benjamin Spock

Spock is a famous baby doctor and his published book is one if the biggest best-sellers of its time. But he was also an Olympic rower and he won a gold medal in 1924 whilst attending Yale University.
